Pampanga’s peacetime years were a period of plenty for
the province, making it the richest market outside of Manila. To celebrate the
advancements made by the province, the Pampanga Carnival Fair and Exposition
was held from April 22-May 6, 1933 at the San Fernando Capitol grounds. “The
greatest concourse of people on the island of Luzon”—was more than a display of
prosperity; it was also meant to be a concrete expression of local autonomy in
keeping with the principles of a truly democratic government. Almost all 21 towns of Pampanga came to participate. With
the exception of Lubao, each town had an art deco-inspired booth, in the grand
tradition of the national Manila Carnival of the Commonwealth years. Prizes
were given to the best and most creatively-decorated booths, shown on this
spread.
